One Day painting workshops with David Giles (In Person)
"Finding YOUR voice as a painter"

Date: Saturday 10th January 2025
Venue: Atwell House & Gallery, 586 Canning Highway, Alfred Cove
Time: 10-4
Cost: $160
Why do you want to paint? What are you trying to express as an artist? Who are you speaking to? what are you trying to say? What is your message?
Many people just start painting and hope for the best and that's something I would definitely encourage rather than condemn but after 30 years as a practicing artist I wish I'd thought more deeply about what I'm trying to say through my art from the beginning. This workshop is a hands-on opportunity to work with an experienced exhibiting artist to tease out what it is you are trying to say through your art.
The workshop will begin with a talk and discussion about why you want to paint and what you are trying to say through your art. This will be followed by a demo where I will try to show how I use painting to allow my deepest inner self, my inner child, to express herself. To express her joy, freedom, confidence and sense of wonder for nature. You will then have the opportunity to have a go at using painting to express your unique voice as an artist. At the end of the session we will have a supportive and friendly show and tell / critical review with a focus on teasing out what you are seeking to express through your painting. Suitable for all levels from complete beginner to professional.

"Creating paintings you love, of places you love"

Date: Saturday 17th January 2025
Venue: Atwell House & Gallery, 586 Canning Highway, Alfred Cove
Time: 10-4
Cost: $160
We all have places we love. We take photos and hold memories of the places we love in our heart. In this workshop we will use those photos as prompts and inspiration to create paintings we love; of places we love. Participants are encouraged to use their own style of painting whether its impressionistic, abstract expressionist or whatever to try to capture their love of a special place.
The workshop will begin with a talk and discussion about our favourite places and why we love them. We will also discuss the painting techniques we can use to express our love of our favourite places. This will be followed by a demo where I will try to show how I use painting to express my love of one of my favourite places, the Djalgarra River at Thompson Rd Pools. I go there often with Ollie, my doggie, to soak in the bliss of being in nature. I love to listen to the water flowing through the boulders and watch the ducks. It gives me great solace. My demo will be in an expressive abstract style, but participants are encouraged to follow their own style or just experiment.  At the end of the session, we will have a supportive and friendly show and tell / critical review with a focus on what feelings are evoked by our paintings. In ourselves and in other viewers.

My mission in all my painting workshops and retreats is to help you learn to let go, trust your intuition and allow your inner child out to play. For me this is true spiritual soul work.

These classes and workshops are great opportunities to work with an experienced artist to explore your artistic voice and purpose and develop your own direction in your work.

I have been teaching painting as a creative therapy process for nearly 30 years with more than a thousand people participating in my programs over that time. Whilst many have gone on to become multi award winning artists my main goal has always been to help people use creative processes to connect with their inner creative self and learn to become more free, authentic and fulfilled in their lives. As well as running my own private programs I have trained and worked for many years as an arts worker in the mental health field, working in various “creative therapy” processes based on positive psychology and transpersonal approaches. I have given talks at numerous forums about art and mental health including the West Australian Mental Health Conference and the WA Mental Health Commission. I currently work for Richmind WA, as their Creative Therapies Coordinator / Principal Artist in Residence developing and delivering art therapy sessions for people on their mental health recovery journey.

In these workshops and courses I bring all this experience together, along with my success as a multi award winning exhibiting artist, to support you to use art to connect more deeply with your inner self, feel the bliss of pure creativity, and learn, through painting, to open your heart, let go and embrace the divine within, embrace the mystical, the wonderful and the enigmatic, “Inner Creative Self’ and see the beauty of nature through the wonder of the inner child.

I hope you will join me on this journey of self - discovery.
